Sissela Nutley

Sissela Nutley, (Ph.D.) has a background in biomedicine and later focused her research at Karolinska Institutet (Stockholm, Sweden) on the development and plasticity of cognitive functions in the brain leading to a doctorate degree. Her main area of interest has been to investigate if it is possible to train executive functions with computerized applications or with time spent on particular activities, such as playing a musical instrument.

Her experience spans from the world of academia to business, theoretical to implementation and recently made the transition from Research Director at Pearson Clinical Assessment to mainly focusing on spreading information about the brain and how we can use this knowledge to improve our understanding of ourselves, our learning and our well being.

She has a special interest in understanding the human brain’s limitations and potential in our interactions with modern day technology and how we can optimize this relationship in order to improve mental health. Her book Distraherad - hjärnan, skärmen och krafterna bakom (Natur & Kultur, 2019) summarizes the research to date on social media, gaming and pornography on the brain and development. She is also the creative director of Arts & Hearts, a non-profit organisation working with social impact through performing arts.

In a time where we are exposed to more sensory input, more decisions and more social comparisons to others, the need to understand how the environment shapes our brains is more necessary than ever. This research based talk covers:

- how the brain’s emotional wiring can be hacked to drive behaviour
- how replacing human contact IRL with digital communication affects well being
- what we can do to achieve mental well being in an increasingly digital world.

Communication in the era of cyborgs & algorithms

We live in a time where our ways of communicating have changed dramatically in a very short time. Of course, this will not stop. With all new technology that will be embedded in our society and even in our bodies, we quickly move forward to a world where the outcome is still unknown.

What we do know is that this will open up a world where we will communicate in new ways, this will change how we communicate, offer services and live our day to day both in our physical and virtual life.

We believe that this year’ s Creative Summit will bring you insights that you can use when forecasting how both you and your organization will interact with both your fellow colleagues and clients in the future.
